🕯️ The Tallow Trilogy, Part III: How We Source and Render Our Grass-Fed Tallow

If you’ve read our last two posts — The Timeless Beauty of Tallow and Debunking Myths About Tallow in Skincare — you already know that we hold this ancestral ingredient close to our hearts. But at Nomadic Roots Farm, we also believe that how we source and prepare our tallow matters just as much as why we use it.

This is more than an ingredient for us. It’s a reflection of care — for the land, for the animals, and for every person who touches or benefits from the finished product.

So today, we’re opening our process to you — from pasture to pour — to show exactly what makes our tallow skincare so pure, ethical, and powerful.

🌿 1. Sourcing: Rooted in Relationship

Everything begins with connection.
We partner directly with local, grass-fed farms in our community — small, family-run operations that share our commitment to regenerative agriculture and humane animal care.

The animals are raised on open pasture, allowed to graze freely and live in harmony with the land. When an animal’s life ends, nothing goes to waste. Every part is used — nourishing people, soil, and craft. The tallow we use is a byproduct of this respectful, full-circle system.

By sourcing close to home, we’re able to:

  • Ensure traceability and transparency in every batch
  • Support small-scale, ethical agriculture
  • Keep our carbon footprint as low as possible

This isn’t just sustainability — it’s reciprocity.

🔥 2. Rendering: Slow, Careful, and Clean

Rendering tallow is an ancient art — a process of patience and precision. It’s where raw suet (the fat from around the organs) is transformed into a clear, pure, shelf-stable oil.

At Nomadic Roots Farm, we render our tallow by hand in small batches, using a gentle, low-heat wet rendering method. This approach preserves the natural nutrients while removing impurities and odor.

Here’s what that process looks like:

  1. Preparation – We trim and clean the suet to ensure only pure fat goes into the kettle.
  2. Slow Heat – The fat melts slowly with a touch of water, allowing it to separate naturally.
  3. Filtering – Once melted, the liquid fat is strained through fine mesh and cheesecloth to remove any solids.
  4. Cooling & Clarifying – The golden oil is poured into sterilized jars and allowed to cool into a smooth, creamy tallow.

The result? A pure, ivory-gold tallow with a soft texture, a clean scent, and a nutrient profile that remains intact.

No chemicals. No shortcuts. Just time, care, and tradition.

💧 3. Blending: Crafting with Intention

Once rendered, the tallow becomes the heart of many of our soaps, salves, and balms.

We blend it with wild and locally grown botanicals — herbs like calendula, chamomile, and yarrow — along with nourishing oils and natural clays. Each formula is designed to complement tallow’s rich, skin-loving profile while enhancing scent, texture, and therapeutic benefits.

Every product we create is tested on our own skin first — because if it isn’t gentle enough for our family, it isn’t ready for yours.

🌾 4. The Circle of Care

Using tallow reconnects us to a rhythm that modern living often forgets — the rhythm of respect, responsibility, and return.

When we render tallow, we’re not just making skincare.
We’re honoring the whole cycle — the life of the animal, the work of the farmer, the health of the land, and the wellness of the community that supports it.

This is skincare that feeds the soul as much as it nourishes the skin.

From the first spark of rendering to the final hand-poured bar, each step of our process is grounded in love, gratitude, and stewardship.

🌼 The Tallow Promise

We’ll never rush a batch.
We’ll never source irresponsibly.
And we’ll never compromise on the purity or purpose of our craft.

Every jar, bar, and balm that leaves our workshop carries the story of careful hands, ethical farms, and a living connection between people and place.

Because when you choose tallow skincare from Nomadic Roots Farm, you’re choosing something real — something rooted in legacy, sustainability, and soul.
