Why We Chose Goats for Our Small Homestead

Why We Chose Goats for Our Small Homestead

Our goat journey started when we discovered that my partner, and now our son, cannot digest A1 cow milk. Plant alternatives can be delicious, but they don’t have the nutrient density that my growing boys need. We started buying goat milk from the grocery store, but at $6.49+ per quart (over $25 per gallon!) that plan just didn’t seem sustainable.

The search for a better option began!

Enter Little Nicklebush Farm: Katrina has been increasingly passionate about raising docile, easy-going, productive goats on the homestead she grew up on. She has nearly 30 years of experience working with Caprine, and during that time, she has owned almost every breed of goat in the US! Some are exactly as you’d expect - ornery, cantankerous, loud, and obnoxious - I had been warned about goats, and this is definitely what I had come to expect! But for her troubles, she also found two breeds who are sweet, gentle, quiet, and calm, with some of the most delicious milk that we have ever tasted. Saanens are mellow, much like their milk. Guernseys are sweet, with creamier milk. On their own, they’re fantastic animals, but Katrina has combined the two to make (in my humble opinion) the BEST dairy goat for homesteaders of all skill levels (especially us noobs)! ...as do I! Stay tuned for a write up on each of our four beautiful girls, and what they bring to the farm.
